Information Governance
Do you know what is information governance?
Obviously, you may know bit of that or may
not know that completely and that’s why you are here to understand more.
First
try to break this in two and understand both terms separately –
1.
Information – Any data/metadata/facts
which has some value/insights to make some decision/come to a result/may help to
solve problems.
2.
Governance – Essentially, how to govern
something in control or as per requirement. So, we all typically know how an
organization is governed/operates/controlled ensuring that use of data and
information complies with org.’s policies/standards/strategy/obligations and
this includes regulatory, contractual and standard business requirements/objectives.
Cool so we know at least basic use
of information governance and how this gets used as a tool in the org. to cover
different aspects.
Let’s talk about some of the common domains that get
affects or focused around information governance.
·
Information Classification
·
Information Management Policies
·
Location of data and Jurisdictional Policies
around that
·
Authorization for accessing and making use of
the data
·
Custodianship
·
Privacy
·
Data Ownership
·
Contractual Controls/Requirements
·
Security Controls around data governance
·
Data/Information security lifecycle (i.e., how
to create/store/use/share/archive and destroy the data).
